I studied the place-names of a Welsh county (Cardiganshire) gathering over 15,000 entries. The work entailed archive research at the National Library of Wales and other such institutions. It also entailed finding, interviewing local people throughout the county in order to get local information (over 200 informants). The information gathered for the thesis was historical, linguistic and geographical, thus providing a three-dimensional picture of how Welsh evolved since the twelfth century. Armed with all this new information I was ready to confront the history of the evolution of the Welsh language in greater detail than hitherto available and has led to further publications pushing the boundaries. The synthetic nature of my research is a case in point where confronting different sources lead to new insights on a subject, and informs me on how deep or how broad must a historian, for example, calibrate in their stated aims of increasing knowledge in a subject.
